Dorm Upgrade

We’re raising funds to make life a little more comfortable for the residents of the Moriah Children’s home.

Each dorm only has one working light and needs an electrical upgrade. The children study until 9pm 6 nights per week, so better lighting will allow the children more focus and efficiency in learning in the late hours.

Fans keep the dorms cool in the hot months. In fact, in the hottest month, the children sleep outdoors because the temperature of their rooms is unbearable. It is estimated that better insulation and fans will bring the temperature in the hot season from a range of 40ºC – 46ºC (104ºF – 115ºF) down to 32ºC – 36ºC (90ºF –97ºF).

Like many in India, these children make do and adapt to their conditions. But we can make it a little easier for them.

Here’s the breakdown of the needs:

Girl’s Dorm:
4 fans & 4 lights
2 Board Switches

Boy’s Dorm:
2 fans & 2 lights
2 Board Switches

Common Areas:
Halls: 3 Fans & 4 Lights
Kitchen and Dining Hall: 3 Fans & 3 Lights

The total estimated cost = $830 (59,080 INR)

We welcome donations to this initiative of any amount. When the project has been successfully funded, we will hire the contractor (which is anticipated to take 1-2 weeks to complete depending on workload), remove this initiative’s post here and create a new post in our blog with photos and information.

Thank you for your consideration. Let’s get these kids a little more comfortable so they can excel!

Below are photos of the current condition of the dorm’s lighting and electrical.

And below is an example of the new, ultra-bright LED lights they will replace the old fixtures with.
